A Morning Routine That Actually Fits in Your Morning (5 Steps, 20 Minutes)

4 min read

Let's be honest about morning routines. The internet version requires waking up at 4:30 AM, journaling for 30 minutes, meditating for 20, working out for 45, and making a smoothie that costs $14 in ingredients. Nobody does this. At least not for more than two weeks.

Here's a morning routine that fits between the alarm and the commute. 20 minutes. Five steps. All of them doable on a Tuesday when you hit snooze twice.

Step 1: Water before phone (2 minutes)

Glass of water on your nightstand, filled the night before. Drink it before you look at your phone. Not because water is magical. Because the first thing your brain encounters sets the tone for the next hour. A glass of water says "I'm taking care of myself." Instagram says "everyone is ahead of me."

Step 2: Three things on paper (3 minutes)

Grab a notebook. Write three things. What are you grateful for? What's the most important thing today? What would make today feel successful? Don't overthink it. Don't make it pretty. Just get it out of your head.

Step 3: SongRise (3 minutes)

Put your earbuds in. Press play on your affirmation song. Your voice, your words, your music. If you haven't created a song yet, this is where you start. Record 60 seconds. Pick a theme. Your song will be ready by the time you finish step 2 tomorrow.

Listen all the way through. Some mornings it'll make you feel invincible. Some mornings it'll make you cry. Both are fine. The point is that you heard your own voice say something true before anyone else told you what your day was going to look like.

Step 4: Move for 5 minutes (5 minutes)

Stretch. Walk to the mailbox and back. Do ten push-ups. Dance to the song from step 3. It doesn't matter what. It matters that your body wakes up before your inbox does.

Step 5: One priority, written down (2 minutes)

Look at your step 2 list. Circle the most important thing. Write it on a sticky note. Put it where you'll see it. This is your day. Everything else is other people's priorities.

Total: 15-20 minutes.

No smoothie. No meditation app subscription. No 4:30 alarm. Just water, a notebook, your voice, a stretch, and one priority.

The secret to morning routines that last is that they have to be boring enough to do on the worst morning of the week. This one is.
